Borderless Legal Advocacy Across Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia & Europe

Nicola Hoobin is a dual-jurisdictional barrister and special counsel with a 30-year legacy bridging corporate enterprise, government policy, and major cultural institutions across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. An accomplished international lawyer, Nicola holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Auckland, a Master of International Laws from the Australian National University, and advanced postgraduate credentials in the Laws of the European Union from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
After a distinguished legal career in Australia, where she served as Principal Lawyer of Nicola Hoobin Legal, a barrister at the Victorian Bar, and special counsel for prominent law firms in Melbourne and Commonwealth institutions in Canberra, Nicola is transitioning home to Aotearoa, New Zealand. She now practices as a barrister at the independent Bar from July 1, 2026, based in Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau, while continuing to provide senior Australian representation as special counsel of Nicola Hoobin Legal.
Operating a borderless chambers practice, Nicola allocates her time annually between Australasia and Italy. This global perspective allows her to offer strategic cross-border advisory services to cultural and business clients, including active investors seeking to establish commercial enterprises across the free trade legal terrains of Aotearoa New Zealand, wider Europe, and Oceania.
In light of the recently concluded free trade agreement between Australia and the EU, Nicola is uniquely positioned to guide clients through the rapidly evolving international law landscape.
Her public sector career includes overseeing the Legal Section for the National Gallery of Australia, where she managed agency legal work and orchestrated high-value international collection contractual frameworks with global institutions. These collaborations encompass significant projects such as the Emily Kam Kngwarray exhibition at London’s Tate Modern—her work marked the first large-scale presentation of the artist’s work in Europe and the first solo show by an Australian artist at the museum—and the Gagosian Gallery for the Jordan Wolfson exhibition, titled Body Sculpture, which is a major robotic work also acquired by the NGA.
As Section Head of the International Standards Section within the Legal & International Division of the Commonwealth Department of Industrial Relations, Nicola drove strategic statutory drafting and complex policy harmonisation, integrating International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions into Australian domestic workplace laws. She collaborated with employee and employer organizations as well as National and State Aboriginal leaders and NGOs to gather input regarding the potential ratification of ILO Convention 169. Working alongside the then Commonwealth Minister for Industrial Relations and the previous Australian Prime Minister, the Honourable Gough Whitlam AC KC, during his post-political career for the ILO celebrations in Australia further demonstrates her commitment to international legal frameworks.
Supported by specialised postgraduate qualifications in Film and Television law from the University of Melbourne, Nicola combines premium legal advocacy with first-hand creative experience as a Cannes and Sundance-selected film producer and major arts executive.
She delivers sophisticated, direct-brief advisory counsel to corporate executives, global brands, and high-net-worth individuals worldwide across sectors such as property, family wealth preservation, trade, art, fashion, international investment, and residency. This expertise effectively navigates the trans-Tasman legal landscape.
